Guys have a bit of a reputation for avoiding the doctor. And it's not all stereotype. According to a U.S. Census Bureau report, men are nearly 14 percent less likely than women to have seen a doctor in the past year.

But if you've read this far, that's probably not the whole story. Like plenty of guys, you'd love to make your health a priority. And getting to know your doctor is a smart place to start.

Make the call for men's health

Research shows that people who have a primary care doctor tend to be healthier than those who don't. And it's no wonder. Your doctor can:

Help you manage chronic conditions. Primary care doctors treat many illnesses—from asthma to diabetes to heart disease. They can refer you to specialists too.

Make sure you get the tests and vaccines you need. Checkups, screenings and vaccines can help prevent big problems down the road. Your doctor will help you know when it's time for tests and shots that can help you stay healthy.

Help you set goals. Whether you want to quit smoking, shed pounds or run a marathon, your doctor can help you get there safely.

Answer your questions. No topics are off limits. So if you have questions about sexual health, substance abuse or anything else, you can always ask your doctor.

Listen to you. Your emotional health is just as important as your physical health. If you're feeling depressed or stressed, you doctor wants to hear and help.
